一夜にしてヒーローになったファルージャにて闘う、くわえタバコの米軍兵士のマルボロ野郎。現実の世界に降臨したマルボロ野郎に、賛辞を送る米国民たち。「タバコはよくないんじゃない」と眉をしかめてみせる良識派。銃後の母（ホンモノ）は、「息子を誇りに思うけれど、タバコはやめなさい。」とお見事なコメント。この構図を批判し、ナオミ・クラインはこき下ろす。
私が最もブキミに思う部分を以下引用。

"Lots of children, particularly boys, play army, and like to imitate this young man. A reader of the New York Post helpfully suggested more politically correct propaganda imagery: "Maybe showing a marine in a tank, helping another GI or drinking water would have a more positive impact on your readers."

ファルージャで市民が次々に殺されている、という事実と「タバコを吸っている兵士を褒め称えるなんてとんでもない」という良識あるアメリカ市民の反応の、体温の差というか感受性の欠落というか、不気味なほどのギャップを私は感じてしまう。
