ファルージャ攻撃

米海兵隊としては、ファルージャの包囲攻撃を第二次世界大戦の硫黄島や1968年のテト攻勢のように捉えているのだそうだ。

「おまえたちは歴史を作るその真っ只中にいる。これはもうひとつのフエ市だ」。イラクにいる海兵隊下士官の中で最古参の鬼軍曹カールトン・ケントが軍に向かって言った。「おまえたちひとりひとりがこれまでどうりやってきたことをそのままやれば、間違いないと俺は信じているーやっつけるぞ」。
"You're all in the process of making history. This is another Hue city in the making," Sergeant Major Carlton Kent, the most senior enlisted marine in Iraq, told the forces. それにしても一番最初に攻撃したのが、ファルージャの総合病院なのだがジュネーブ条約違反なのはもちろんだがその理由がまたひどい。この総合病院は、米軍による攻撃・空爆があるたびに、病院における死傷者の数を発表してきたのだが、このことが「プロパガンダ」で、米軍の恨みを買っていたらしい。

One unnamed senior American officer also admitted that the hospital had become a "centre of propaganda," reflecting the military's frustration at the high death tolls doctors frequently announce after American bombing raids.
